Periodontics in Salt Lake City, UT

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focusing on the structure around your teeth like gums, tooth roots, and others. Your oral health isn’t restricted to your teeth but also includes other parts of the mouth, and our periodontist understands the same. You can visit our clinic to address certain issues related to your gums, and we will take care of the same.

Stages of Periodontal Diseases

1. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is caused because of the excess buildup of plaque around your gum line. The accumulation of plaque must not be left untreated as it can develop into its severe stage and may harm your gum and overall oral health.

2. Mild Periodontal Disease

It is the second stage of periodontal disease, affecting the fibers and bones supporting the roots of your teeth. Under this stage, the infection reaches into your bone and starts deteriorating it.

3. Moderate Periodontal Disease

It is a more advanced stage where the bacteria attack your bone and bloodstream more severely. Our dentist may suggest a gum disease treatment regime to treat this condition.

Advanced Periodontal Disease

It is the final stage where the bacteria start damaging your gum and bone that supports your teeth. Under this stage, the condition of your mouth becomes severe and our dentist may use laser therapy or periodontal surgery to treat it. If left untreated, the bone could shrink severely and lead to tooth loss.

Treatment of Periodontal Disease

The treatment of periodontal disease varies at each stage. We will decide the best treatment after examining your gums and teeth and determining the source of the problem. In general, the first step of the treatment includes deep cleaning. This procedure involves the removal of tartar and plaque from your teeth and roots.

Once the bacteria and plaque are removed, your gums will start healing naturally. If the disease has reached a more advanced stage, we may perform scaling and root planing to address it. We may also perform a gum graft surgery by taking tissue from the roof of your mouth or any other area and then grafting it on the infected area.

If your gum disease has led to bone loss, we may also perform a bone graft to strengthen and restore your teeth. Under this procedure, we will use natural or synthetic bone to compact and seal the area.

How to Care for Your Gums?

After treating your gum disease, we will guide you towards proper care of your gums. Brush and floss your teeth after meals and rinse your mouth using an antiseptic mouthwash to keep plaque, tartar, and bacteria away.
