As a kid friendly dentist, we offer gentle dentistry to help children feel more relaxed during their appointments. We understand that children are usually not super excited about dentistry. Our job, however, is to change their opinion of dental care and show them that it can be fun and interesting. This way they will want to brush and floss their teeth, even without being told.
Exams for Infants and Children
Schedule your child’s exam with our Salt Lake City Children’s Dentist Office before the first birthday or when the first tooth starts. We will discuss an oral health plan that will ensure that with twice yearly exams your child’s teeth will stay healthy. Starting early will ensure healthy adult teeth in the future.
During the appointment, we will examine the teeth but we will also teach the child how to brush properly. Even if your child is already brushing they might be doing it wrong. Brushing is a crucial step but that does not mean that children must be serious while they do it. Try making it fun to brush teeth by playing their favorite song for two minutes and letting them dance and brush. You can also play a two-minute video clip or cartoon for them while brushing. Brushing of course is not always enough and flossing needs to become a routine with children as soon as age 4 with you helping and by age 8 they should be flossing for themselves.
The deep ridges many children have in their teeth are difficult to clean with a toothbrush alone. Food and bacteria particles can become trapped in the ridges and create tooth decay. To create a barrier against the tooth decay a dental sealant is applied. A sealant is a thin plastic coating applied usually to the child’s back teeth, where cavities are commonly found. The procedure is not painful and can be completed in one appointment. At Bishop Family Dental, we have found this to be an uncomplicated way to prevent your child from getting cavities.
Fluoride is a natural occurring mineral that combines with the tooth’s enamel to give it strength. Many local water supplies have added fluoride to the system, however if your family does not use the water a fluoride treatment might be recommended. Fluoride treatments have been known to decrease cavities by 30% when used throughout the teenage years. Children’s teeth are under constant attack from food acids and a building a protective layer of defense is key to be cavity free.
A consistent care over the first five years Is important for your child’s dental care. Choosing our Salt Lake City Family Dentist allows the whole family to be seen at one location and a complete plan of family care can be established.
